From Bald Cypress to Saw Palmetto, Naples Has Many Noteworthy Trees
Nearly 30% of the city of Naples is canopied by trees. There are trees all over this area and some of them have been around for a very long time. Though the city has many trees, there are some that are more prominent than others either due to their height or their longevity. In the next several paragraphs, we will discuss some of the area’s most famous and acclaimed trees that help everyone see the natural beauty of this part of the state.
The Saw Palmetto in the Botanical Gardens
The saw palmetto is an extremely slow growing, almost shrub-like tree that has long inhabited this area. It grows to only a height of 7 to 10 feet, but expands and clones itself under stress, so it can be very wide. The Naples Botanical Gardens are home to a small grove of these trees which can live for thousands of years. So the forests may be ancient, even if they are small. It has been estimated that the ones in the botanical gardens are over 100 years old.
The Royal Palm At Fakahatchee Strand State Park
This tree was added to the National Register of Champion Trees back in 2012. At that point it aws 82 feet tall. It stands above all the other trees in the area. There is a grove of royal palms in the area, but the tallest one is this particular royal palm.
The Bald Cypress of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
This sanctuary area provides boardwalks that allow visitors to see the flora and fauna of the sanctuary. One of the most stately and majestic sights is the bald cypress trees. These amazing trees are extremely hardy and are even able to survive being struck by lightning. There are many in the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, but there are a dozen that are designated by names such as the Calusa Tree and Dutcher. These are called “landmark trees” in the park.
The Trees of Naples Zoo
The Naples Zoo has several different specimens of old trees that are sure to catch a visitor’s eye. Many of these were planted by botanist Dr. Henry Nehrling who owned the land on which the zoo now stands. He had a collection of over 3,000 species of plants.

There is also a giant Indian Laurel in the zoo that stretches its limbs far over some of the walking paths.
Mangrove Groves of Rookery Bay Research Reserve
Red mangroves are very important both as an inland barrier against storms and as an animal habitat. The mangrove grove in the Rookery Bay Research Reserve is one of the last remaining groves that is undisturbed. Some of the large mangroves there have been measured with a circumference of four and a half feet.
