Tree service professionals of Naples, Florida share how to care for certain high maintenance trees.

High Maintenance Trees Can Be Worth The Extra TLC

The Floridian climate is one of the many reasons people emigrate to the state so frequently. The humid subtropical weather makes for mild winters and hot summers. Plants grow in abundance from the Gulf to the Atlantic. Despite the prime conditions for many plants, some others need a little extra help due to water needs, soil quality sensitivity, weak branches, and low adaptability to salt or pH changes.

Let’s look at five different tree types that can be great additions to your landscaping, but only if they have a little extra attention.

Ficus

There are many different types of ficus, which includes fig trees,  among many others. These trees can be grown in pots in a sort of bush form, but can be grown outside in the lovely Florida sun. They are deep green and leafy when well cared for. They do have an affinity for pests and certain diseases, perhaps because they are such a large family of trees. They are also sensitive to soil changes and need consistent water.

Queen Palm

Known by the scientific name Sygarus romanzoffiana, the queen palm or cocos palm is a graceful tree with the quintessential palm look. In order to maintain their regal appearance, however, they often need extra nutrients from fertilizer and need to be checked often for pests and disease.

Southern Live Oak

The long lived, giant canopied Quercus virginiana is a Florida native tree and is usually considered adaptable and hardy in this area of the country. Its branches are so wide and long-reaching, however, it may often need pruning to prevent dropped limbs. Because they are of the oak family, they are also susceptible to the tree disease known as oak wilt. They need a good deal of space to grow, so be sure to have the space if you want to plant a Southern live oak.

Bottlebrush

The bottlebrush or Callistemon family of trees are so named for the bristled appearance of the showy red flowers the tree produces in spring. It is a fast growing tree and needs frequent pruning in order to maintain control of their shape. Drought conditions can be hard on them as well, so they should be monitored and watered regularly.

Sycamore

These large trees are fast growing and have a large root system to match. They grow tall and are desirable shade trees. The unique bark of the Platanus family is an attractive feature but also sheds pieces regularly, much some organic mess. The leaves also shed year round, not just in the autumn. They require a lot of water and can be susceptible to anthracnose.

If you are looking for the perfect tree for landscaping your property, the best way to go about it is to consult with a professional. A certified arborist can not only advise homeowners and business owners on the best trees for their space, they can also provide tree health care for those trees including tree pruning, tree trimming, and tree risk assessment. They can also provide soil analysis and advice on mulch and fertilizer.
