Tree service company professionals of Naples, Florida, provide a guide to reconstructing the lawn post tree removal.

Three Steps Toward Complete Lawn Repair in the Aftermath of Losing a Tree

Whether it is knocked down by a storm or it is simply in decline and risks damaging the home, when a tree has to be removed there is always a scar on the land. The yard is left with a hole and very likely the marks of the heavy vehicles and equipment used to take the tree down and out. A homeowner may fear that their yard will not recover, but there is still hope with proper plant and tree care and a dose of patience.

Step #1: The Cleanup and Preparation

The tree service professionals will take care of most of the tree, but often, some dead limbs and leaves still have to be removed. Cleaning up is the first step in returning to the yard you want. While the aesthetic factor is certainly a big part of the motivation for the removal of the organic detritus, the main reason for getting rid of that stuff is to prevent pest infestation and tree disease that can sometimes be attracted by dead wood.

After this is dealt with, the real work to prepare the soil can begin. The steps for completing ground preparation are listed below.

  • Fix Compacted Soil: The treads of large vehicles can gouge out areas in a yard and fallen trees can pierce the lawn. If the soil is packed down then the water and nutrients have a harder time getting to the roots of the surviving plants. Aerating the soil loosens it and helps even out the landscape and promote growth.
  • Add Fresh Dirt: New soil that is specifically for potting or fresh growth should be used to fill the hole left by the stump removal.  This helps nourish the plants around the missing tree and helps prepare the soil to successfully germinate new grass seeds to encourage root growth in a new tree.
  • Get Soil Analysis: Have the soil analyzed by a certified arborist. That will tell you how to proceed. If the soil is too acidic, try adding limestone to the area. If it is short on nutrients, consider adding some deep-root fertilizer.

Step #2: What to Plant and Plant Health Care

There is a wide range of things that can be planted in the place of the tree that has been removed. Some of the ideas that come to mind and should work well are in the following list.

  • Sod
  • Grass seed
  • Butterfly garden
  • Young native tree
  • Fruit tree

There are many options, both living and inanimate, for filling the void, but replacing it with grass or flowers will likely be a quick solution to the aesthetic problem of a hole in the yard.

Step #3: Plant and Tree Maintenance

If the soil has been properly prepped then the only thing the homeowner should really have to worry about is watering regularly. Now, this does not mean overwatering, so beware of drowning the grass or other plants that are attempting to fill the vacated space. When it comes to tree care, leave the tree trimming, tree pruning, and tree risk assessment to the experienced professionals and certified arborists who have had years of training and access to the proper tools. Tree health care can be as easy as picking up the phone.
